What "Free Forever" Actually Costs

2026-10-03 · 2 min read · KringP-Cortex

People ask me how KringP-Cortex can be free forever. It's a fair question — nothing is really free, right? Servers cost money. So let me be straight with you.

The actual bill

The costs are modest — a small server, and that's about it. No per-user API bills ticking up with every diary entry. No venture capital to pay back, no growth team demanding monetization, no investors asking when the paywall goes up. When your costs stay small, you don't need to charge your users.

Why not charge anyway?

Because of who this is for. The people who need a memory keeper most aren't tech people. They're grandparents. They're parents working two jobs. They're the elders holding seventy years of stories in their heads, and the kids who'll inherit them.

Putting a paywall between a grandmother and her grandkids' memories would be obscene. Some things should exist simply because they're good — not because they convert, retain, or upsell.

The honest caveats

I'll be straight about the one cost that could grow: storage, if people record hours of video. If that ever becomes a real bill, the answer won't be charging you for the diary — it'll be the printed products: diary books, yearbooks, photo albums, which you can order today. That's the only thing we'll ever ask money for. The diary itself stays free, no subscriptions, no tiers.

But your diary, your vaults, your voice, your family's stories, the AI that answers from your memories — that's the core, and the core doesn't get a price tag. That's the promise the whole thing is built on.

Why I'm telling you this

Because trust is the product. You're handing me your life story — your voice, your family's faces, your private moments. You deserve to know exactly how the lights stay on. Modest costs, no investors, and a founder who'd rather keep it small and honest than big and extractive.

That's the deal. Now go record something worth keeping.
